Marujada is an ancient tradition that remains in the city of Bragança, northeast of Pará, since the end of the 18th century, when it was pioneered by black slaves in honor of Saint Benedict. Since then, drummings and litanies in praise of the Saint are performed almost all year round, as groups of beggars cross the region from May to December, playing and singing in the houses of devotees, and receiving donations for the great celebration that happens by the end of the year.
Thus, every December 18 Bragança celebrates this unforgettable party, playing and dancing “retumbão“, “xote”, “chorado”, waltz, “arrasta-pé”, “contradança” and mazurca. And the latter is the one I present here in a four-voice arrangement (two flutes, bass and piano), accompanied by an electroacoustic rhythmic base. It is a small tribute of mine to the devotees and adorers of Marujada of Bragança, for the coloring, the sounds and the joy left in my memory.

A Marujada é uma antiga tradição que se mantém na cidade de Bragança, no nordeste do Pará, desde o ano de 1798, quando foi iniciada por negros escravos em homenagem a São Benedito. Batuques e ladainhas em louvor ao santo são feitos quase o ano inteiro, pois já em maio três grupos de esmoleiros percorrem diversos municípios da região, tocando e cantando todos os dias nas casas dos devotos, e recebendo donativos para a realização da festa.
E todo 18 de dezembro começa em Bragança essa festa inesquecível, onde marujos dançam retumbão, xote, chorado, valsa, arrasta-pé, contradança e mazurca. É esta mazurca, parte da suíte de danças da Marujada, tocada a pau-e-corda em um barracão, o tema do single que gravei aqui, num arranjo a quatro vozes (duas flautas, baixo e piano), acompanhado por uma base rítmica eletroacústica. É uma pequena homenagem minha aos devotos e adoradores da Marujada Bragantina, pelo colorido, os sons e a alegria que deixaram na minha memória.
